Systems Software Developer Median Salary

Systems Software Developer Median SalarySystems Software Developer Median SalarySystems software developers are some of the top-paid technical specialists today, generally with more education than any other IT workers. Systems software developers create or modify the software that runs computers and other technologies like phones, network routers, and switches. The Windows 8 or Mac OS X operating systems, for example, are created by a team of hundreds of developers. Systems development is not limited to operating systems. Software drivers and firmware used to access computer components are also designed by systems software developers, as is the software used in a computers BIOS to access processors and hardware components. Basically, anything that has a chip in it requires a systems software developer to make it work. These positions differ from application developers, who create the programs that run on the operating systems. Education A job in systems software development gener ally requires more education than fruchtwein computer positions. Companies that hire systems software designers usually require a bachelors degree in computer science or a related field like computer engineering. A post-graduate degree may also be required for some positions. Several years of on-the-job training or vocational training is often required as well. For those currently in the workforce, ages 25 to 44, half of all systems software developers hold a bachelors degree and 29% have a masters degree. Four percent have a doctoral or another professional degree. Only 5% have an associates degree, 9% have gone to college without getting a degree, and only 3% have not gone to college. National Overview According to O*NET, the median salary of systems software developers in the United States in 2011 was $96,600. The most recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the median income in 2010 for systems software developers was $94,200. This is more than $6,000 higher than the median salary for application software developers. The bottom 10% of system developers earned less than $61,000 in 2010. The top 10% of earners made more than $143,300. Regional Variations in Salary Like most technical positions, system software developer salaries vary from one region to another. The following lists the median salaries of 12 states in 2010, compared to the national figures. 3 Ways Your Professional Bio Could Be Hindering Your Career

3 Ways Your Professional Bio Could Be Hindering Your Career3 Ways Your Professional Bio Could Be Hindering Your CareerA few years ago, all you needed to get a job was a strong resume and a solid reputation. Today, there are all sorts of factors that can impact your career and your ability to land new opportunities. Your professional bio is one of them.A professional bio is simply a summary of your career background. It includes information on who you are, what you do, where youve worked, the value you can offer and what makes you special, unique or worth considering. It should be engaging and on the lighter side when compared to a resume, but still professional in terms of tone. Once written, you can use your professional bio in a variety of different applications including on your LinkedIn profile, on your website, or in your work portfolio. While a polished bio can help you in your career, one thats weak, poorly written, too wordy or just plain boring can actually hinder you. Here a re three ways how1. Inconsistent information. When the professional bio on your LinkedIn profile is different from the one on your website, recruiters and hiring managers wont know which is most accurate and up to date, discounting each of them in the process. Once your bio is complete, its therefore important that you share it across all your professional social media profiles, as well as include it anywhere else thats pertinent.2. Too much fluff.Sure, you might be a strategic thinker, industry mover and shaker, and self-starter. But language like this doesnt mean anything to anyone. Instead, you need to get specific and stick to hard facts. For instance, whats the biggest accomplishment of your career? And what impact did it have on your employer? Quantify it wherever you can with specific dollar amounts, percentages or other numbers.3. A lack of personality.Your professional bio is unlike your resume in that it should showcase your personality and have a little color in it. When i ts written like a legal document, though, nobody is going to read it. Part of infusing some life into your bio includes adding in personal information, like the volunteer board you sit on, the 10 half marathons youve run, and the charity event you organize every year. This will help to set you apart from other professionals in the field and make you more relatable.A well-written professional bio can make a big difference in your career by opening you up to new job leads, exciting opportunities, speaking engagement offers, and so much more. But producing one can be a challenge if writing isnt your strong suit. Let the professionals at ResumeSpice help. Give us a call at 832.930.7378 today to learn more or get started.

While Udemy courses arent accredited, you can download and print out certificates of completion. Some instructors also offer their own certificates. Be a Smart Consumer Udemy must approve all classes before they are available to users. They hold their instructors to high standards, for example, they are forbidden from marketing any products to students and may not include any irrelevant content in a course. That doesnt, however, mean every class will meet your standards. Here are some things to do before you purchase a course Look at the course details If you click on the course title you will be brought to the class landing page where you can s ee details about the curriculum and instructor.Watch a preview Every class has a free preview available that you can access from the landing page. Watch it to determine if the material and instructors teaching style are right for you.Read student reviews See what other students thought of classes they completed. Reviews are also on the landing page.Dont purchase a class until you are ready to begin You may ask for a refund within 30 days of purchase if you decide a course isnt right for you. The clock starts ticking the moment you pay. Dont download the entire course at once Udemy states on its website that it may reject refund requests if a student has downloaded the entire course.Purchase directly from Udemy or the android app Udemy will not issue a refund for courses that have been purchased from third-party sites or through the IOS app. Check with the third-party site about returns of products you purchase through them and with Apple about IOS in-app purchases.Avoid repeated ret urns Udemy may suspend your account if you repeatedly purchase and then return items. Waitfor ausverkaufMany courses cost close to $200. That price may be much more than you are willing or able to spend. Udemy holds sales that could bring the price down significantly. At the time this article was written, many courses with original prices ranging from $149 to $199 were on sale for $10.99.Search for free courses To view free courses, go to the category in which you are interested, click on all courses and then price. Millennials Should Avoid These 5 Ways to Choose a Career

Millennials Should Avoid These 5 Ways to Choose a Career Millennials Should Avoid These 5 Ways to Choose a Career Sometimes, we focus on the right way to do a task. But other times, it is helpful to look at the wrong way to do something. As acareer coach, I have worked with studentsand adults of all ages, and I have seen some troublesome patterns in the ways that people attempt to choose their career directions.Rarely do these approaches work.Today, I want to take a look at those bad approaches so you (or your children or grandchildren) can avoid them1. I Saw It in a Movie (or on T.V.)The problem with trying to pattern your real life after movies or television shows is that they are, by nature, unrealistic. The image of a job in a movie or on T.V. will either beoverly dramatized or, more likely, overly glorified. If you think you know what a therapist does because you sawGood Will Hunting (or my favorite, What About Bob?) or what the versicherungsscheindo from watching Americas Most Wanted, you will be sorely disappointed. It may sound silly, but you would be surprised how oftenyoung people give me this reason for choosing a career.2. Ever Since I was Little, I Wanted to Be Im sorry, little Johnny, but your six-year-olds image of what a firefighter does isnt anywhere near reality. (Some of them dont even drive red trucks anymore)And although Karen may have enjoyed playing school and teaching her younger siblings when she was 10, that doesnt mean shehas a clue about the realities of managing 20-25 third-grade students or what the job outlook is like.3. My Parents Think I Should Now, I think most parents have pretty good understandings of their childrens strengths and abilities. And parents of students often have good ideas (I know, because I am one). But, most of the time, this approach reflects the parents desires for the child more than the childsown preferences. As a result, the student wont have the motivation to persevere through difficult times to reach the goal, and their career will fall flat.A variation of this theme occurs infamily-owned businesses, whenparents desperately hope for a child to come into the business. Unfortunately, the results can bedisastrous because the (frequently oldest, compliant) child doesnt always have the capabilities to be successful in the position.4. I Didnt Know What Else to Study so I Chose This is a common response among college students, especially those who are sophomores and juniors. They feel pressure to choose a major (rightfully so), but they dont know what they want to do, so they default to a general major like business, education, psychology, or general studies. Many times, these students are lost because they have never worked and dont know what is out there. It would be far better for them to take a semester or year offtowork in the area they are considering (not in the family business). This experience will give them far more valuable information than continuing to take classes would.5. I Took the Intro to XYZ Class and Didnt Like It, So I Changed My MajorAaggh This one drives me crazy - and unfortunately, it is one of the most cited reasons for changing ones major. For example, imagine a student who has had a long-term interest in some form of medical work (nursing, physical therapy, etc.). The student goes to college and takes Biology 101, taught by a graduate teaching assistant. Then, because the class is boring or difficult they change their major to music education (or whatever). What a poor way to make a career choiceAsk any professionaltosee if the introductory courses have any relevance at all to what they actually do in real life (business, psychology, education, engineering anything). Making career decisions based on coursework is a good way to make a bad choice.Paul White, Ph.D., is a speaker, trainer, author, and psychologist who makes work relationships work.

5 Excuses That Sabotage Your Career Dreams

5 Excuses That Sabotage Your Career Dreams5 Excuses That Sabotage Your Career DreamsLooking for a job that satisfies your career dreams? Be carefulIt begins during the job search, and it can continue right through your career if youre not aware of itsdanger. Its easy to get hooked. Its hard to break free. It can take over your whole life and you wont actually landsee it until you look back on it in your later years and sigh with a sigh thats fully laden with resigned regret. (Cue the music of doom.)No, Im not talking about some insidious disease or newfound addiction.Im talking about failure. Im talking about how easy it is to choose to fail, even if you dont know youre doing it. Im talking about the use of the biggest sabotage tool out there the excuseFor some strange reason, in the job search process or in the job itself once a person has secured it, it becomes easier for many people to use excuses to prevent them from getting or enjoying a GREAT job.Looking to fulfill your career d reams? Here are the top five most popular excuses used by thousandsThese five excuses need to be seen for what they are reasons to fail at finding or having your dream job. Theyre permission-giving hall passes. Lets debrief these excuses a little to see how to debunk them.1. Im not a lucky person. Great careers are a matter of luck. A person has to be in the right place at the right time and know exactly the right people to get the best jobs. Ill be happy with a good job. Its good enough to have a good job.Debunking Excuse 1 Luck might be part of it, but its certainly not the biggest part of having an amazing career. Choice, action, and ambition play a bigger role than luck does, hands down.2. Only geniuses live their passion. Some people are brilliant and succeed at whatever they touch and while Im very intelligent (and good-looking, I might add), I just dont have the stroke of genius it takes to do what these people do. Im ok with that.Debunking Excuse 2 Passionate people live out their passions not merely their interests, and intelligence (or genius) isnt the determining factor. If you discover your passion, seize it and run with it- you have a far better chance of loving what you do than settling into something thats merely good enough.3. Im not creative enough. People who follow their bliss, as they say, are a little strange. They wear funny clothes, they dont care what others think, and they are- well- weird. Youd have to be silly to do what they do. Im just normal, so here I am.Debunking Excuse 3 People who follow their bliss are determined and focused, not weird. Theyre exactly not normal, because they stand out above the rest. Youve heard of the expression why be normal? This is exactly the right question to ask. Besides, normal is boring.4. I just need to work harder.People with great careers work super hard, and so far Im working hard but havent run with this yet. I havent had time. When I get to a place where I can, I will. Probably.Debunking Excuse 4 Working hard makes for a good job and working harder makes for a great job? Really? I believe this mathematical equation is incorrect.I know a lot of people who work exceedingly hard and definitely wouldnt say they have great careers as a result. Be wary of this one.Choose something you want to do in the first place when searching for a job, and then the hard work you do will feel rewarding.People who follow their passions say resoundingly that if the fit is right, it doesnt even feel like work much of the time.Ask anyone who feels called to what they do and loves it, and youll see the pleasure they take in what they do much of the time. Who wouldnt want that?5. I have a family to think about. Its a matter of priority, and Im not willing to sacrifice my relationships for the sake of my career. Ill leave that to people who want to put their work first. Most of these successful people are married to their jobs. This 2-step, 10-minute exercise creates immediate self-awareness

This 2-step, 10-minute exercise creates immediate self-awareness This 2-step, 10-minute exercise creates immediate self-awareness “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” ?  Albert EinsteinSelf-knowledge is important. But self-imagination is far more compelling and powerful. Actually, being highly imaginative is how you become self-aware.You never actually have an objective perspective of yourself. Instead of trying to be objective, you should seek to be imaginative.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Even your memory is imagined and not objective. Yet, as children, we are trained to not be imaginative, which stops us from developing powerful memories and powerful futures. As Tony Buzan said, “Children are trained to think linearly instead of imaginatively; they are taught to read slowly and carefully and are discouraged from daydreaming. They are trained to reduce the use and capacity of their brain.”The more imaginative you can be about yourself, about what you learn, and about your future, the more creative control you have over these things.Your brain functions best when you use your imagination; when you combine both your left and right brains; when you engage all of your senses; when you exaggerate things and are playful. In his TED talk, Stuart Brown said, “Play leads to brain plasticity, adaptability, and creativity … Nothing fires up the brain like play.” Similarly, Greg McKeown said in Essentialism, “Very successful people see play as essential for creativity.”The more creative you are, the more successful you can become. The more imaginative you are, the better your brain will operate. When you allow yourself to be more imaginative about yourself, you will be blown away by how much faster you can learn. You’ll be blown away by how flexible and your identity and capabilities are. You’ll realiz e that your brain and memory have a seemingly infinite capacity and that you’re living far beneath your potential. For starters, here’s a quick 10-minute exercise that will begin your process of re-creating your life, surroundings, skills, and world.Step 1: Mind-map your yourself (5 minutes)“Through using our memory to its fullest we can unlock the vast reservoir of human potential that isn’t currently being used.” -  Tony BuzanMind mapping is a skill used by many of the world’s best learners. Rather than taking notes or jotting down your ideas in a linear fashion using only words, mind mapping taps into all of the senses of both the right and left brains.Basically, with a mind map, you take out a blank piece of paper and draw a circle in the middle and put your name. Then draw lines going out from the circle and write down whatever categories of your life you want to have, such as health, money, relationships, achievements, spirituality. When creating a mind map of yours elf, write down all of your dreams, ambitions, and characteristics.Hold nothing back. Also, rather than simply using words, it’s far more powerful to use images. Your brain stores colorful and even moving images much easier than static words. The more imaginative you can be, the more powerful and memorable your mind map will be.Your identity is imagined. Your future identity is also imagined. So you might as well take creative control over the imagination-process. You might as well become brilliant at the imagination process. This will make your memory far more flexible and powerful, empowering you to more fully embrace new experiences and transform those experiences into growth. Here’s how you can fold time. When you create a mind map of your future self in a highly imaginative and visual way, you create memories of your future self. The more emotional the memory the better, as emotion creates the context and feeling of the memory.Zig Ziglar is famous for saying, “You have to “ Be” the right kind of person first, then you must “Do” the right things before you can expect to “Have” the things in life that really matter. Dad keeps it pretty simple - Be, Do, Have.”When you mind-map your future self in a highly imaginative way, you fold time and bring your future self into the present. This will allow you into a new role and identity that can immediately act congruently with your goals. For example, you may put on your mind map that you will be a millionaire. However, the regular behaviors involved in being a millionaire likely conflict with your current identity and behaviors. Therefore, you need to pull your future self into the present and begin being and acting as that person now.Again, the more imaginative, visual, and emotionally-stimulating this written-process, the more engrained it will be into your memory. And your memory in large part shapes your identity and future.Step 2: Write your own obituary (5 Minutes)“While I thought that I was learning how to live, I have been learning how to die.” -  Leonardo da VinciOnce you’ve mind mapped your future self, the next step is to write your own obituary. You can take 5 minutes or 50 minutes on this.Either way, it is powerful to write out your obituary from the vantage point of you already being dead. What would you like that obituary to say?Again, be very imaginative. The shocking part about life is how much it can bend itself to fit your mind, feelings, and imaginings.A very smart question when considering your own obituary comes from billionaire, Peter Theil, who asked, “How can you achieve your 10 year plan in the next 6 months?”Why does this question matter? Because it cuts through the noise like a hot knife cuts through butter. You absolutely can achieve most of your wildest dreams in the next 6â€"12 months. You simply need to start living to die instead of dying to live. This is what Robin Sharma calls having a “death-bed” mentality. It means you never take another day for granted again. It means you bring extreme and powerful enthusiasm to everything you do.Enthusiasm is contagious. It gives energy and life. When you wake up and bring enthusiasm to what you’re doing, your mind begins sparking with creative ideas and insights. Your doubts and fears begin to wash away. Productivity becomes automatic. What will your obituary say?Write it down and then put it on your wall right next to your visually stimulating mind map. This is how you create a transformational trigger that immediately causes a deep sense of remembering. In your day-to-day life, it’s easy to fall back into cycles. It’s easy to forget what you really want and what you stand for. However, if you have a transformational trigger which immediately reminds you of the future you, then it can zap you into that role and identity in the here and now. Thus, not only will your emotionally-charged trigger remind you, but it will also transform and reshape you.A lifetime state of playAccording to Strategic Coach founder, Dan Sullivan, life can and should be organized such that you live in a continual state of play. How do you do this? You never stop learning. Your brain needs all of the information it can get - however, garbage in, garbage out. Your life is a product of your standards and your brain is the product of the quality of information you put in. You deepen your human relationships. Nothing is more important for the human brain than love. You could get all of the nutrition, oxygen, and information you need - but without love, your brain will hardly be able to process anything. However, when you have love, all inputs are amplified and expanded. You always make your future bigger than your past. You remove everything from your life that is keeping you stuck. You allow yourself to imagine something more compelling and exciting. You focus on “who” instead of “how.” You allow yourself to want what you really want, and never operate from a state of “should” or “have to” again. When you give yourself permission to seek what you truly want, you immediately have far more energy, excitement, and enthusiasm about what you’re doing. If something doesn’t excite you, then you’re not being imaginative enough about the game and how it’s being set up. Your future should be extremely juicy and compelling. It should even potentially scare you a little bit because it’s so amazing.Charles Haanel, considered to be the father of modern self-improvement said,“Remember that no matter what the difficulty is, no matter where it is, no matter who is affected, you have no patient but yourself; you have nothing to do but convince yourself of the truth which you desire to see manifest.”ConclusionWhere will you be in 6 months from now?How close can you get to achieving your 10-year plan in the next 6 months? How imaginative will you be?Are you willing to be bold? Are you willing to be direct? Are you willing to do what will actually work, rather than being emotionally-att ached to the outcome and to your ego?Are you willing to create a life that allows you a continual state of play and awe?How much bigger is your future going to be than your past? What will your obituary say? Will you fold-time and begin living your future today?Ready to upgrade?I’ve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet here! This column first appeared on Medium. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Immigrants and Non-Citizens in the US Armed Forces

Immigrants and Non-Citizens in the US Armed Forces Immigrants and Non-Citizens in the US Armed Forces In the last 15 years, over 100,000 military members who were immigrants are now United States citizens. Immigrants serving in the United States military has deep historical roots. Non-citizens have fought in and with the U. S. Armed forces since the Revolutionary War. According to One America, nationally, each year around 8,000 non-citizens enlist in the military. Naturalization through military service is a legitimate method to increasing recruitment as well as giving immigrants an opportunity to become citizens. MIlitary service for citizens as well as immigrants with Green Cards is a voluntary process. Each branch of the services has different requirements for enlistment, but there are some standard requirements that all the branches have. Among these requirements is that only individuals who are U.S. citizens can become commissioned officers or require special security clearances (Intelligence, Nuclear Power, Special Operations) in the United States military. Those who are considered US citizens also include citizens of Puerto Rico, the Northern Marianas Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Non-citizens are eligible to enlist in the military but can not be commissioned. A non-citizen must meet certain requirements to be eligible to join the military. The must have an Alien Registration Receipt Card (stamped I-94 or I-551 Green card/INS Form 1-551) as well as a bona fide residence established with an established a record of the U.S. as their home. If the non-citizens comes from countries with a reputation of hostility towards the U.S, they may require a waiver. The federal government cannot petition on behalf of an illegal immigrant so that they can obtain legal status and be able to enlist in the military. In order for an immigrant to join the United States military, they must first go through the immigration process of the USCIS (previously known as the INS - Immigration and Naturalization Services) and then and then begin the enlisting process. Another requirement is that the Green Card and/or visa of the immigrant desiring to join the military must be valid for the entire period of their enlistment. Undocumented immigrants may not enlist in the U.S. military. On most military bases there is a USCIS representative to discuss and assist with the administrative process of applying for citizenship. The Dream Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) was a bill that has stalled in Congress with a specific provision for military service in that dreamers could either go to college or join the military in order to benefit from the Dream Act. Although immigrants are eligible for deferred action if they have been honorably discharged from the military, undocumented immigrants are not eligible to join up, meaning the policy would only apply if they had already served. Single Term Enlistments (Until Naturalized) Individuals who enlist in the military and are non-citizens  are limited to one service term. If non-citizens become U.S. citizens then they are permitted to reenlist. For an immigrant who joined the US. military, once they are in active duty status in the military, the process of going from a non-citizen to U.S. citizen can be expedited. Military services and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services have worked together to streamline the citizenship application process for service members. In July 2002, President Bush issued an executive order that made non-citizen members of the armed forces eligible for expedited US citizenship. Revisions in the US citizenship law in 2004 have allowed USCIS to conduct naturalization interviews and ceremonies for foreign-born US armed forces members serving at military bases abroad. According to USCIS data from April 2008, more than 5,050 foreign-born service members have become citizens during overseas military naturalization ceremonies while on active duty in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Kenya, as well as in the Pacific aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Since September 2001, USCIS has naturalized more than 100,000 foreign-born members of the armed forces and granted posthumous citizenship to 111 service members. According to February 2012 data from the Department of Defense, more than 24,000 immigrants ( non citizens and naturalized citizens) were serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. This represents approximately 3% of all active-duty personnel. Nationally, each year around 8,000 non-citizens enlist in the military. The top two countries of origin for foreign-born military personnel in the U.S. are the Philippines and Mexico, with nearly 11 percent of those serving in the armed forces being of Hispanic origin. As of 2016, over 500,000 foreign born veterans resided in the United States. Foreign veterans make up approximately 3 percent of the total veteran population. The military benefits greatly from the service of its foreign-born. Non-citizen recruits offer greater racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity than citizen recruits. This diversity is particularly valuable given the militarys increasingly global agenda. Additionally, statistics show that: Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic non-citizens who have served for at least 3 months are nearly 10 percent less likely to leave the service than white citizens. Non-citizens who have served for at least 36 months are 9 to 20 percent less likely to leave the service than white citizens. sources: Migration Information Source, One America with Justice for All, Immigration Forum

AmLaw 100 numbers not that terrible actually

AmLaw 100 numbers not that terrible actually AmLaw 100 numbers not that terrible actually The annual AmLaw 100 rankings were released today, and even though David Lat said, This is an exciting day the internets, for the most part, said meh. To be sure, the news is bad, but its also not really that bad. Three of the four key metricsgross revenue, head count and revenue per lawyerfell, while profits per equity partner (PPP) barely increased by 0.3 percent, or $3,463, to $1.26 million. Aric Press posits two main reasons for the slight uptick in PPP:Firms aggressively reduced expenses in 2009. And, the number of equity partners in The Am Law 100 dropped. There were 139 fewer of them, down 0.73 percent, to a total of 18,808. By contrast, the number of nonequity partners increased by 640; collectively they now constitute a record 37.9 percent of all Am Law 100 partners. In other words, fewer people to share pie with = more pie.Press also sees evidence of two broader, underlying developments:1. The segmentation of The Am Law 100 continues. The firms with the highest PPP experienc ed the highest increase to PPP. The front of the pack are leaving the pack farther behind.2. Is there life in the old business model? Maybe soif one discounts the dizzy heights of the irrationally exuberant years of 2007 and 2008, the AmLaw 100 has experienced a steady upward progression over the last 3 years: 11 percent bigger, 3 percent up on RPL, and up 5 percent up on PPP.Bonus Fun BigLaw Fact!Baker McKenzie edged Skadden by a mere $10 million for the No. 1 position for gross revenue. They are the only two firms that grossed more than $2 billion. And yetBaker McKenzie has roughly twice the number of total lawyers as Skadden.-posted by brian

The future of work is creative, flexible, and human

The future of work is creative, flexible, and human The future of work is creative, flexible, and human Forget the rigid corporate ladder.Today, the most attractive and best places to work allow free-flowing ideas and career paths. In the industrial age, businesses were built on strict hierarchy.Today, in the digital age, we are witnessing a major shift. As thought patterns, economic times, and digital technology evolves, the traditional work environment is growing, changing, and emerging with the times. The future of work is a lifestyle of personal preferences, personal development, and personal responsibility. The future of work means fewer hours spent on-site, locked into a cubicle, and punching a time clock tied to a rigid set of hours and rules. It means remote teams, separate but collaborative teamwork, and working around one’s lifestyle. This is evidenced by the growing number of specialized business consultants, the prevalence of freelancers, and the continued emergence of the gig economy.Today, businesses are learning to adapt to the creativity and flexibility of the modern worker and the modern workplace. As employees learn to embrace a shared vision for the companies they represent, a new culture is being created and established.Increasing digitization, the rise of digital natives and productivity pressures are causing businesses to rethink everything. The future of work is creating and defining a new company culture, a new office norm, and a new organizational success. As this new workforce emerges, it brings with it a new way of meeting the needs of the corporate and small business world. In the future of work, creativity still rulesOur future economy will be built on creativity and technology. The digital revolution won’t render people obsolete. But it is a paradigm shift. There will be immense opportunities for people who combine creative, technical and social skills - skills that are resilient to future automation. When individuals work separately, then come together to create a whole, they bring increased innovation and originality to the table.New ideas are more readily introduced and embraced when creativity and imagination are allowed to flourish and thrive.Employees feel most appreciated when they’re given creative freedom and viewed as valuable resources as opposed to being seen as dispensable. The workplace of the future must adapt and learn to trust employees to manage their own time, productivity, and personal development. Not only does that lead to a happier, healthier, more productive workforce, it frees upper management to focus on other critical tasks, obtain and nurture and new and existing clients, and foster greater company growth. As companies define the work they need done and the projects they need completed, they create new teams and departments. They key is in understanding how those teams and departments come together to create a company-wide whole. When several freelancers, contractors, consultants, and gig economy workers are collaborating on a singular project, they become a de facto team.Contemporary and emergi ng technology means these teams might work together without ever seeing each other face-to-face.These alliances are integral to the future of work as video conference rooms, screen sharing, and time tracking unites teams and builds partnerships in a new, tech-based way.The future is flexible and adaptableIn the past, flexibility was seen as a perk, not a necessity. In recent times, flexibility at work has become more common and acceptable, with the advances in technology making it a whole lot easier to work remotely and stay connected to your team.More and more companies have been adopting a flexible approach to work - permitting work from home, offering unlimited or fleixble vacation, and even swapping cubicles for different types of workstations.According to a recent Upwork report, the workplace of the future is very likely to look like your home office, or the coffee shop around the corner, or that new shared working space downtown.Flexibility and adaptability allow companies to move beyond mere proximity and create a global workforce that naturally gives way to cultural and relational diversity.Because of differing lifestyles and time zones, work can now take place around the clock eliminating the limitations and time constraints of the traditional eight-hour work day.As each moving part of a company’s team takes on projects, the company will begin to see its workforce spread far and wide.Companies must begin to reevaluate how they interact with their in-office and outsourced staff.Executives and small business owners must learn to balance the workload between both types of team members. The future will benefit from diverse talent poolsBy opening its doors to the gig economy, where workers with varying degrees of experience, skill, and talent come together to form a unit, today’s businesses benefit in big ways. With less overhead and a larger pool of qualified candidates to choose from, it’s easier for a small business owner or corporate executive to i dentify and locate the specific skills and talents they require at any given point in time. The ability to pick a desired gig economy worker for their specific skill and return to them on an as needed basis means less overhead, fewer expenses, and improved productivity. This talent pool means communication is essential, benchmarks are met, and quality is at the forefront of production and output. All the creativity, flexibility, and humanity the future of work is creating relies heavily â€" and perhaps ironically â€" on the innovations, trends, and changes of technology.Without the technology that lets us share screens, host multi-person conference calls, share files, and send and receive email, the workplace might have remained largely in a central location. The ability to move from cue cards, storyboards, and in-house design departments to freelance copywriters, graphic designers, and production partners wouldn’t be possible without current technology. How ironic is it, then, that th e technology that makes it possible for workers around the globe to work independently is the same technology that brings those workers together?Rather than a single office or complex, the future of work is a series of single-person homes, home-based offices, and co-working spaces where teams are remote but connected.Even today’s fully staffed corporate offices have seen a shift from three-piece suits to shirts and ties to casual Fridays to week-long casual dress codes. From traditional gray cubicles to banks of offices to remote offices, the office environment, itself, is changing.Colorful offices with relaxed, playful furnishings, bright, colorful walls, and comfortable seating are replacing traditional work spaces and conference rooms. The workplace of the future is learning to value people in an entirely new light. It values human relationships, places importance on creature comforts, and is open to new levels of innovation and change.Workplace flexibility allows individual team members to make time for family and social obligations creating a more pleasing and appealing work/life balance. The future of work is creative, flexible and guided by human aspirations in a way unrealized by previous generations of workers. At the same time, some workplace truths and necessities remain unchanged.Companies and organizations will always be reliant on effective communication, financial efficiency, cost-effective productivity, and team collaboration. These trends, changes, and workplace adjustments make the future of work creative, flexible, human, and possible. The future is up to youThe future is yours to shape. You have the power to change and adapt your skills to stay relevant and indispensable. You need to start spending time preparing for the future even when there are more important things to do in the present and even when there is no immediately apparent return to your efforts. If you find yourself trapped for the foreseeable future because you are stuck in a soul-c rushing job, remember, you always have two obvious options: settle or plan for a career change.Don’t be afraid of the unknown if you decide to pursue your life’s work, because everything is unknown. And if you decide to do work that matters to you, don’t stop because nobody’s buying it, sponsoring it or sharing it yet.Show up everyday and work on your most important life work. It matters that you show up.Whether the outcome is magnificent or eternal, whether it changes people’s lives, changes the world, changes you or groundbreaking, it matters that you show up.If you pursue your dreams long enough, compounding takes effect.Momentum will surge. Most people can’t show their most amazing work to the rest of us because they fear criticisms. They feel inadequate. They are scared people will think it’s not good enough. Others are living in their comfort zones because of fear. But remember everything great happens outside your safe zone.Choose to reinvent you career and make the most of the exciting, and promising future of work.If you’re not sure what you want to do next, yet you know you want a change, you should go ahead and get started, with a focus on strengthening your core skills.Excerpted from my recent book, Working in the Gig Economy: How to Thrive and Succeed When You Choose to Work for Yourself. Why I stopped being busy

Why I stopped being busy Why I stopped being busy Do you know that feeling of being so busy that time flies with a blink of an eye? We’re so busy with all kinds of things- work, friends, going out, holidays, etc. But being busy is not a good thing at all.Especially because  we waste most of our time on nonsense. We say we’re busy but in reality, we just fill up our lives with crap.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  We binge-watch tv shows for days, we go to networking events with weirdoes who try to sell you their services, we spend hours finding new clothes to buy so we can impress people we don’t even like. We’re busy with bullshit. But until a few years ago, I never got it. When people asked me, “how are you,” my answer was, “busy.”What’s wrong with us? Why are we so busy with things that don’t matter? We even use our busyness as an excuse for important things. That’s sad. After I realized that I wasn ’t in control of my life, I decided to stop being busy.Being busy is an excuse that losers use. I say that because you can use “busy” as an excuse for everything. You forgot your anniversary.  â€œYeah, but you know how busy I am, right? I’ll make it up to you.” You haven’t called your mother in six months.  â€œMom, I’m sooo busy.” You didn’t go to the gym.  â€œI’m too busy to work out.” And the WORST:  â€œI’m too busy to work on the stuff that makes me happy.” That can be your music, business, model trains, or whatever. I’ve used all those excuses. But at some point, I told myself this: How on earth can you be too busy to give someone that’s important to you a call? That’s nonsense.Every time you say you’re busy, you’re actually saying that you can’t prioritize your life. Most people identify being busy with being successful. But unlike 95% of the people I know, I don’t think being busy means you’re successful. When you meet people, they often want to show you that they have busy lives. “A full calendar must mean that I’m doing SOMETHING right,  right?”The truth is: If you’re busy, you don’t live at all. You just exist.Derek Sivers, author of  Anything You Want, and one of my favorite thinkers, says:“To me, ‘busy’ implies that the person is out of control of their life.”“But if I’m not busy, what the hell should I do?”Slow down there. Take a step back. And think about which things in your life are just ‘busy work’ and not meaningful.Seneca put it best:“A g ood man will not waste himself upon mean and discreditable work or be busy merely for the sake of being busy.”Here’s how I put that in practice. It’s absolutely fine if you DON’T have plans for the weekend. People’s favorite question on Monday is: “What did you do over the weekend?”You don’t have to do things so you can tell others about it. If people ask me, this is what I say: “NOTHING.”Or, I say: “I wrote, went to the gym, and had dinner with family.”And they look at me like: “That’s all?”What?  I’m not cool if I didn’t travel the world, had dinner with aboriginals, and jumped out of a jumbo jet on the way back?Another thing: I say NO a lot.Want to grab coffee all day? Want to write an article for money? Want to work for us? Want to do this, or that? No, not now- I don’t want to be busy. When you’re busy, time moves fast. And I want time to move SLOW. That’s why I only say yes to things that matter to me.You know that feeling? Some days seem l ike forever, and years later, you still remember how you felt that day. You should feel like that almost every day.All you have to do is slow down, stop being busy, don’t forget about important things, and live a conscious life. It’s not that difficult, right? You can start now. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux.

Tips for Evaluating Stock Options in a Job Offer

Tips for Evaluating Stock Options in a Job Offer Tips for Evaluating Stock Options in a Job Offer If you work in an in-demand industry, have a rare skill, or simply get lucky at the right company, you might land a job offering stock options. Owning a piece of a company’s growth can provide an extra incentive on the job, and it has helped employees at all sorts of companiesincluding Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Facebookbuild substantial wealth. When considering or comparing a compensation package with stock option benefits, understand exactly how stock options work and what they might be worth. What Is a Stock Option? A stock option gives an employee the ability to buy shares of company stock at a certain price, within a certain period of time. The price is known as the grant price or strike price, and it’s typically based a discounted version of the price of the stock at the time of hire. Purchasing the stock shares at the grant price is known as exercising your options. Employees who exercise their options and sell their shares when the company’s stock is trading significantly higher than the grant price have the potential to make a lot of money. For example, say you have the option to buy 5000 shares at $10 and sell the stock at $50, with a $50,000 investment you end up with $250,000. How do employees come up with the cash to exercise the options and buy the stock? You can use savings, rollover proceeds from another stock sale, or borrow from a brokerage account and pay it back immediately. Because stock option plans typically vest over time, employees don’t need to purchase the shares all at once. Under a typical vesting schedule, the employee may only own 25 percent of his options after year one, 25 percent after year two and so on, until 100 percent vested in year four or five. Timing is important, however. If the stock price is trading lower than the grant price, the options are said to be underwater. Exercising options is useless if the employee can buy shares of the company stock for less on the open market. Types of Stock Options There are two types of stock options: qualified incentive stock options (ISOs) and nonqualified stock options (NSOs). Most employees get NSOs, which are priced at a discount and taxed at ordinary income tax rates. Qualified ISOs, usually reserved for top executives and key employees, are taxed at a lower capital gains rate, which tops out at 20 percent for gains on investments held for longer than a year. A tax hit occurs once the options are exercised, so you pay either income tax or capital gains tax depending on whether your option is qualified, based on the grant price. Once you exercise the options, you can sell the shares after a short waiting period, or hold onto the shares and wait for the stock to increase further before selling. Some investors hedge their bets by doing a bit of each. Why Do Employers Offer Stock Options? Once reserved only for the executive team, stock options became a popular form of compensation during the tech boom in the late 1990s. In fact, the NCEO reports that there were 30 percent more workers with stock options in 2001 than in 2014. Back then, there were many tales of stock option success, and certain types of employees were looking for a sense of ownership in their workplace that went beyond the paycheck. Stock options offered a way to give everyone in the company an additional stake in the business’ growth. By 2001, so many options were underwater that they lost some of their appeal among the corporate masses. But in the world of start-ups, enough people got very wealthy from stock options that they remain a great tool for attracting early-stage talent. There are a variety of reasons employers want to offer stock options. Discounted company stock can increase a loyal employee’s compensation without hurting profits. Vesting programs can help build longer-term loyalty among employees. The sense of shared ownership can foster a strong corporate culture. Employees literally help to grow the company not just as staff, but as shareholders. For employees, stock options can result in tremendous wealth, particularly if you join the company at an early or growing stage. On the flip side, those are the companies that are also likely to go under with only worthless stock options left behind. It’s all about the timing, which is one of the downsides of stock options for employees who are not paying attention. Stock options have expiration dates and will be worthless if held too long. But deciding when to exercise before the options expire can be difficult as well. One camp says hold out as long as you can, waiting for the pinnacle price. On the other hand, you may risk waiting too long and miss the peak, or else exercise too early and miss more growth. There is no right answer. The circumstances will depend on your company, the market, or any number of things that you may not be able to predict. Should You Opt for a Job With Options? All else being equal, stock options are generally a great perk. While they offer the potential to amass great wealth, however, there’s also the potential for frustrating disappointment. If you accept a job with stock options, it is helpful to ask the human resources representative if there is any guidance or advice to help sort out stock options for employees.

Do What Makes You Happy

Do What Makes You Happy Do What Makes You Happy Theres never a reason to feel stuck. Change is always possible. But before considering a career switch, its important to understand what makes you happy at your core. You dont want to find yourself in a situation where the only thing thats changed about your job is the location when your job satisfaction depends on much more than your commute. Take the time to do some real self-exploration. Dig into: Your Motivations When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Money aside, what could you see yourself doing that would make you happy? Make a list of the jobs that come to mind. Look for any commonalities between them in terms of general skills required that may align with your strengths. Your Natural Talents You know what youre good at. You know where you excel, what you enjoy doing, and what makes you feel most appreciated at work. You will be more engaged in a job that puts your talents to good use, so tally up how many job responsibilities currently allow you to apply these skills. Your Values Do you appreciate the ability to work independently, or do you value teamwork more? Do you prefer to consistently learn new skills, or do you like having the opportunity to really fine-tune one skill in particular? Is feeling like youre helping others or contributing to a cause of importance? Having a clear understanding of what will provide you with long-term fulfillment - rather than making a change as a short-term solution - will make all the difference when it comes to finding workplace happiness. These are the 3 habits you need to learn anything

These are the 3 habits you need to learn anything These are the 3 habits you need to learn anything Habits are learned through rewarded practice. Some habits are completely unconscious, for example: checking your phone when you experience a moment of boredom. You may not have realized how much this has become a habit in your life (as it has in mine), simply because our phones are very good at negating that feeling of boredom (negative reinforcement reward). Some habits are acquired through deliberate practice. For example, if you play a sport or a musical instrument, you probably have created a warm-up routine to “get ready” to perform. When you perform well after your warm-up, you feel good (positive reinforcement reward). My recommendation for optimizing your learning habits is to follow what I call the  3 Aces: Awareness Become aware of the habits you’ve built up around learning (both the deliberate and the unconscious). Some of these might include studying using notecards (deliberate), reacting emotionally to feedback (unconscious), maintaining a todo list (deliberate), ignoring certain items on it (unconscious). There are many deliberate and unconscious habits we form over time. Several of them come from the educational system we were born into, our families and friends, or our challenges and triumphs and the stories we tell ourselves about them. Get curious about these habits and make a list of the ones you’re already using. Label each habit you practice as “deliberate” or “unconscious.” Access   Once you have a list of your current habits, you want to access them in a way that allows you to build in more opportunities for deliberate practice, feedback collection, and self-reflection. Every learning habit can be made more powerful by introducing or increasing the amount of practice, feedback, and reflection. How can you access your habits? Let’s use an example from the above. Let’s say you’re looking at your phone for the 30th time today. Reflection:  Why did you start looking at it? Were you looking to learn some piece of information or were you simply bored? Feedback:  Let’s say you were just bored or anxious, turning that moment of boredom or anxiety into a moment of curiosity would create an opportunity for you to learn something. Practice:  Each time you look at your phone and realize it was out of boredom or anxiety, recall the things you’re curious about and learn something new about one of them. This will turn an unconscious habit into a deliberate learning practice. You can do something similar with many of your unconscious habits. As for the deliberate ones you picked up in school or at work, think about how much feedback you collect while performing these habits, or how much reflection you do throughout, or how much access to practice opportunities these habits actually give you. If you can increase the amount of any or all of these in your current habits, they will improve your access to learning throughout your daily life. Accountability   Learning something new often feels like going to the gym or working muscles you haven’t worked in a long time. Your brain has to deal with a lot of chaos when you’re learning something new. Without getting into the nitty gritty of the cognitive science of brain mechanics, let’s just say that when you expose your mind to new information or concepts, your brain goes into overdrive trying to connect these new ideas to thoughts you’ve had before. The result can be a lot of chaotic “synaptic firing” and this, like the “twitching” of your muscle fibers during exercise, requires energy and feels to you like work. Sometimes that work can feel like stress or strain, and often times it’s easy to get distracted by things that don’t or turn away from the work. I’ve tried four times in my life to learn to play piano. I’ve failed each time because at some point, it got too strenuous and I decided to go learn something else that I believed would give me greater reward (like the financial reward of acquiring work-related skills or the “runner’s high” of exercise). The next time I learn to play the piano, I’m going to set up a habit of accountability in my practice. I will hire a piano instructor (seek mentorship), I will learn and practice with a friend (create a community of practice), I will schedule my practice sessions and record the times I make it and the times I miss (track time spent). But most of all, I will build in the fun and joy of improvisation (create and manage rewards), because without that, I would likely give up my dream of one day playing in a jazz band (personalize the goal). In short, you already have many of the habits you need to successfully learn every day of your life. All you need to do is start becoming aware of them, accessing additional feedback, reflection, and practice opportunities, and holding yourself accountable for the brain training you want to do. Improving your learning habits each and every day is a very learnable and rewarding habit in and of itself. Good luck, and always remember to have fun!
